We purchased a Vizio 47-inch HDTV back in 2006 or 2007 (I don't remember which) and this remote came with it. The TV has been excellent and my whole family's enjoyed it very much. HOWEVER, the remote has been a different story. Just recently, it started malfunctioning, and mind you, we've only had this remote for 4 or 5 years. You have to press down very hard to get the buttons to work, and sometimes they don't even work at all. It's been quite frustrating to say the least. I don't know about the lifespan of your typical remote, but when you spend this much money on one...it should last longer than this. That's just my opinion. Overall, I'm very happy with my Vizio products but this remote is not the greatest product.
