Customer Reviews

Ubuntu (13.10) Linux Winner - Top Notch Review by Steve Graham

I bought this laptop to replace a Macbook Air I have been using for the last year. The Macbook was supplied by the company I work for. But I have been a desktop Linux user for at least ten years now and never really liked OSX. I do however love the form facter on the Macbook and really wanted to find something similar.

I am a software developer and had to have multicore I7 and lots of memory to use. After finding several reviews on previous models, and after getting a sense of what might work for me under Linux and what might not (wireless, touchscreen, potentially wonky touch pad) I decided to give this model a try.

When fired up on a USB boot drive with Ubuntu 13.10 live, everything seemed to work except the wireless (expected - its a new chipset). I plugged in an ethernet dongle and ran update, and the wireless worked. The latest wireless drivers in the repository worked flawlessly. I could connect to my b/g/n netowkrs at both 2500 and 5000 mhz.

So I proceeded with the install. I chose not to keep the Windows 8 to preserve the hard drive space for Linux. Even though I selected the option to download updates during the installation, the wireless was not working on reboot. I plugged in the ethernet dongle again, performed an update on the newly installed OS, rebooted, and the wireless worked.

Many reviews on previous models were lukewarm on the touch pad and keyboard. In spite of the touchpad being far smaller on this model than my Macbook Air, I don't notice the difference when working. The touch pad is a dream. Easily the equal of the one on my Mac Book. My typing error rate is down compared to the Macbook Air, at least after making the adjustment to the new keyboard. So those reviews were wrong, or Vizio stepped up their game on this model.

The touch screen works for basic functionality (point, click, drag), I haven't tried anything else, but am expecting to find out that some of the advanced gestures won't work without some additional driver work for it. I didn't really care about the touchscreen, but am find I like it and its a nice bonus.

The 4 core I7 just rocks. This blows away the Macbook Air (2 core I7) and its faster as well. The screen is slightly larger in width with a corresponding resolution increase. So thing are the same size on this screen that they were on the Macbook, there is just more screen space. And the screen is awesome. Very bright and wonderful to look at.

Build quality is off the charts. I have absolutely fallen in love with this laptop.

I am currently driving a second screen when at my desk and it has no trouble running both screens.

The only downside compared to the Macbook Air is battery life (slightly less time), and weight (about a pound more but the touch screen added most of it).

I couldn't be happier to be back in Linux and off of OSX. Thank you Vizio for giving me a very solid alternative to my Macbook Air that I can take to company meetings with pride. It looks like a million bucks even in a crowd of Macs.
